Unclaimed Shares Discovery & Recovery Hub
Thousands of crores in equity shares remain unclaimed across Indian listed companies due to address changes, forgotten certificates, deceased holders, or lack of Demat conversion. Explore how to trace, verify, and recover your family's equity holdings.
What Are Unclaimed Shares?
Unclaimed shares refer to equity shares issued by Indian companies that have remained inactive, un-dematerialized, or whose corresponding dividends have not been encashed by the registered shareholder for 7 consecutive years. Under Section 124(6) of the Companies Act 2013, such equity holdings are transferred by the company to the IEPF Authority demat account.
Common Reasons Why Shares Become Unclaimed
- Un-notified Address Change: Dividend cheques or corporate notices sent to an old residential address were returned un-delivered.
- Loss of Physical Certificates: Paper share certificates were misplaced, damaged, or lost during house shifting.
- Deceased Shareholder Cases: Original investor passed away without registered nominations, leaving legal heirs unaware of the holdings.
- Lack of Dematerialization: Old physical share certificates were never converted to Demat accounts after SEBI mandated electronic trading.
- Corporate Actions & Name Changes: Company mergers, demergers, stock splits, or name changes caused confusion in tracking historic folios.
How to Trace & Recover Unclaimed Shares
1. Initial Folio & Database Discovery
Search historic physical certificates, old dividend warrants, or query investor databases using shareholder names and past addresses.
2. RTA Verification & Status Check
Contact the respective Registrar & Share Transfer Agent (RTA) to confirm current folio status, total share count (including bonus shares), and IEPF transfer status.
3. Documentation & IEPF / Transmission Filing
Execute ISR-1/ISR-2 KYC forms, non-judicial stamp paper indemnity bonds, legal heir transmission documents, or e-Form IEPF-5 as applicable.
