Unclaimed Dividend in India: How to Check and Recover It
Understand unpaid and unclaimed dividends, historical company disclosures, IEPF transfers and the recovery steps investors may need to take.
What is an unclaimed dividend?
A dividend may remain unpaid or unclaimed for a period of time because a payment was not received, the address or bank details changed, or the investor did not notice the payment.
Unpaid dividend versus IEPF
These are related but not identical concepts. The status of a particular dividend depends on the applicable statutory period and the company's records. Some amounts may remain with the company before transfer, while eligible amounts may later be transferred to IEPF.
How can I investigate a historical dividend?
- Identify the company and relevant financial year.
- Check the company's investor/unclaimed dividend information.
- Record the folio or other identifier where published.
- Confirm the current status with the company/RTA or applicable authority.
- Follow the prescribed claim process.
Why high-value records deserve careful verification
A large unclaimed dividend amount can be a useful clue, but it is not by itself proof of a large shareholding. Dividend per share and corporate actions matter when estimating the underlying position.
